Beneteau Cup

The 2009 Beneteau Cup was held the weekend of September 20th in San Diego and sponsored by Beneteau USA and South Coast Yachts who is the dealer in San Diego. The fleets of six Beneteau first 36.7’s and five Beneteau first 40.7’s we charmed by steady 12-15 knot Pacific breezes for both days and some very competitive First series racing. What’s great about the First series One Design racing is that everyone has the same opportunity to perform well and possibly win, and this year’s Beneteau Cup was a good example of that, with boats and crews who placed in the bottom of the fleets last year, now gaining firsts, seconds, and thirds! It was very fun competition for all participants.

In the first 36.7 fleet, Steve Ernest and his crew from “Amaint De Filles” (which means “chick magnet” in French!) got three bullets and won the regatta and also the 2009 West Coast High Point Trophy. A close second and the “most improved” went to Bo Kopaniasz and his crew on “Sorcerer”. Laird Moony and his crew on “Tsunami” raced very well and placed a very respectable Third. In the 40.7 fleet, there was heavy competition and even though he had a “did not start” in one of the races, Mark Stratton and his Los Angeles based boat and crew from “Lugano” Won the 40.7 class and also the High Point Trophy. Warren Gross with “Silhouette” and Armando Silvestre with “Estela B” were Second and Third, respectively. The team at South Coast Yachts in San Diego is looking forward to more boats and competition at next year’s 2010 Beneteau Cup in mid- September. Thank you to all who joined us this year!
